Dakota started her career in 1999. Her first movies was Crazy in Alabama, in which she starred alongside her real-life mother, Melanie Griffith. In the year 2006, she signed with an international modeling agency, IMG Models.
Before embarking on her acting career, she signed with the William Morris Agency. In 2010, she starred in Oscar-nominated film, The Social Network. The movie is based on the story of founding Facebook and the resulting lawsuits.
In 2011, she appeared in Beastly and in 2012 she portrayed in 5 movies: For Ellen, Goats, 21 Jump Street, The Five-Year Engagement, and Transit. She portrayed the lead role in Date and Switch. In 2012, she made her TV series debut with comedy series Ben and Kate.
